Kamrup (M) dist admin extends voting period

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 20 - The period for voting, being conducted to select an animal as Guwahatis icon, has been extended till June 4.

The Kamrup Metro district administration said that the period for voting has been extended on account of the good response received from citizens.

The results of the voting will be announced on June 5 on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

It is noteworthy that the district administration, the forest department and an animal lovers organization had in early March started the Guwahati Citys Animal Voting Campaign programme to save the endangered species in and around the city by deciding to launch an online voting to select an animal as the citys icon. Guwahati will be the first city in the Northeast to have a rare species as its symbol.

The voting is being done through www.myanimal.in and people of the city can vote to choose one out of a list that includes black soft-shell turtle, greater adjutant stork and the Gangetic river dolphin. The voting had started on

March 6.

The contest has been taken as part of an initiative to create awareness about the endangered animals living in and around the

city and help in their conservation.
