NILAMBAZAR, Nov 2 - November 4, 1919 was a momentous day in the history of Karimganj town as Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore visited the town on way to Sylhet and spent more than half an hour at the Karimganj railway station. The local people gave him a massive reception there. To mark the centenary event of his glorious visit the Barak Upotyaka Banga Sahitya o Sanskriti Sammelan, Karimganj district committee is going to install a bronze statue of the Kabiguru at the Karimganj railway station on November 4.

It may be mentioned that during British rule in India, there was a rail route from Guwahati to Bangladesh via Mahisashan in Karimganj under the then Sylhet district. Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore came to Karimganj railway station on way to Sylhet and the said passenger train was stopped at Karimganj railway station for about half an hour instead of the usual three minutes with special permission from the Railway authorities.
