KAAC polls before Magh Bihu: Himanta

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Dec 7 Although no notification has yet been declared by the State Election Commission regarding the 11th KAAC elections, the Congress has stepped up its poll campaign in the hill district.

It needs to be noted here that government spokesperson and Minister for Health and Education Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has been seen spearheading the poll campaign in the past couple of weeks to help the Congress retain power in the district.

A few days back, Dr Sarma attended Congress rallies held at Howraghat and at Kherani in west Karbi Anglong. On Tuesday too, Sarma took part in two Congress rallies held at Bokajan and Bakaliaghat respectively.

Addressing the rally presided over by Sum Ronghang, president of the Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee at Bakaliaghat, Dr Sarma clarified the government's plans about the forthcoming KAAC polls, the holding of which looked uncertain at one point due to frequent objections made by the UPDS.

Dr Sarma asserted that the elections will be held before Magh Bihu.

But a group of political leaders are allegedly raising a hue and cry with regard to holding the elections to mislead the common people.

Criticizing the UPDS, Dr Sarma said that intention of UPDS and PAPA, its alliance partner, is only to grab power, not welfare of the people. Hence, UPDS and PAPA are continuously pressuring the government for an interim body. If PAPA and UPDS are really interested in people's welfare, then they should have dared to accept the decision of voters. "If voters accept them with an open mind, then we have nothing to say," Dr Sarma said.

On the peace accord signed by the Central and State governments on November 25 last with the UPDS, Sarma stated that the salient features mentioned in the pact between the government and UPDS militant outfit had been raised by the Congress five years ago. But instead of cooperating with the Congress at that time, the outfit had fervently opposed these points, the minister pointed out.

Highlighting the major steps taken up in the health and education sectors, Dr Sarma called for developing Karbi Anglong as a model district by preferring maximum facilities of health and education for the people.

In their speeches, HAD Minister Kharsing Engti and KAAC CEM Joy Ram Engleng duo strongly criticized PAPA and UPDS.

Addressing the Congress rally, both the Congress leaders appealed to voters not to fall prey to false propaganda launched by the opposition parties.

Local MLA Bidya Sing, Bokajan MLA Klengdong Engti and EMs of KAAC took part in the rally.
