Jyotirupa one-act play contest gets under way

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 - The 39th Jyotirupa Annual Northeast One Act Play Competition started at the District Library Auditorium here today. The competition was inaugurated by acclaimed actor Sadhan Hazarika.

The four-day competition that gives a platform to budding talents from different parts of the State, will conclude on January 31.

While inaugurating the event, Sadhan Hazarika lamented the declining audience-base for such art forms like one act plays.

There was a time when theatre in general and one-act plays in particular, enjoyed a distinct place in the hearts of the people of Assam. But, for various reasons, a very limited number of younger people now embrace this segment of the theatre, he said, while lauding socio-cultural organization Jyotirupa for its untiring efforts to give a platform to the new generation.

The jury of the competition comprises Prabhat Goswami, Purnima Saikia Pathak and Subheswar Das.

Aair Alankar by Kristipathar of Guwahati was the inaugural play of the event. The Kishore Thakuria Memorial Mono Acting Contest, too, began today, with the performance by Phalgudhara Bharadwaj.

A souvenir commemorating the occasion and works of Jyotirupa was also released at the inaugural event. The souvenir has been edited by Bhuban Lahkar.

Jyotirupa vice presidents Roman Sarma, Naren Hazarika, Dilip Barua and Minati Choudhury and its executive member, Ashim Kumar Deka took part in the inaugural event today.
