Jyotirupa committed to amateur theatre

GUWAHATI, Jan 23 � Socio-cultural organization Jyotirupa has reaffirmed its commitment towards providing a platform to the upcoming theatre groups in the region so that creative pursuits become the norm in an atmosphere of conflict and distrust.

Functionaries of Jyotirupa while addressing media persons here on Thursday said that the medium of theatre is a potent tool to usher the positive changes in the society and stressed the importance of providing an opportunity to the amateur theatre groups to showcase their skill.

"We have been relentlessly striving to create an ambience for the budding theatre groups so that they can show their talents. And we can say with satisfaction that over the years our effort has seen many men and women with skills come to the limelight," said Naren Hazarika, general secretary of Jyotirupa.

One of the initiatives of Jyotirupa, the North East One Act Play Competition has been able to attract the participation of many amateur theatre groups thus adding a momentum to the theatre movement in the State. In its 35th edition this year, this competition will kick off on January 25 at the Rabindra Bhawan here at 4 pm. The Kishore Thakuria Memorial Mono Acting Contest too will be held simultaneously.

�Eminent playwright, director, actor Hemanta Dutta will be felicitated by Jyotirupa on January 30,� informed Dr Roman Sarma, vice president of Jyotirupa.

The prizes to the winning teams and in individual category would be presented on January 30.

�In our earlier competitions, we had several good plays. This year too we are hopeful the audience will accept the plays,� said Dilip Baruah, working president of Jyotirupa adding that new experimentations in the field of theatre by the amateur groups will provide a refreshing experience to the theatre lovers.

Requesting the citizens of Guwahati to be part of the ensuing programme, the Jyotirupa functionaries said that support of the people is very essential to take the theatre movement forward.
