Jumbos creating havoc in West Karbi Anglong

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Dec 22 - Repeated raids by wild elephants since the past several months have created widespread panic among the people of Jengkha and the surrounding areas of West Karbi Anglong district.

Only recently, wild elephants entered Langparpang Deuri village located within the general area of Kopili at around 11:00 pm and demolished houses and properties in the area.

In the attack under reference, the house of Lalbahadur Chauhan of Joysing Teron village was smashed and household properties damaged.

The elephants pilfered three rice bags, three bags full of sesame seeds, three bags of mustard seeds, one bicycle, paddy seeds, household utensils, garments, NRC and other valuable documents, the haggard villager informed.

Villagers of the area affirmed that they constantly experience load-shedding every time elephants mount an attack or enter the village.

Till date, maximum incidents of man-elephant conflicts have taken place at the Southern Forest Range, under which the area falls. But the authority has reportedly not bothered to lift even a finger to drive out the marauding herds to their natural habitat or protect the villages from repeated assaults.

Herds of wild elephants had also ventured into the Dikreng region within Kheroni Police Station of West Karbi Anglong district at around 10:30 pm recently, thereby sending alarm bells ringing among villagers of the area.

Further, the area is under persistent attack by wild elephants as the sugarcane crop has matured in the nearby Phelangpi region, which is in the vicinity of human habitation.

Watching wild elephants continue with their trail of death and destruction over the years, a section of exasperated and heart-broken villagers questioned as to how the government expected them to resolve the crisis.
