Joy, enthusiasm mark Rongali Bihu celebrations

GUWAHATI, April 16 - Joy and enthusiasm marked the Rongali Bihu celebrations organised by the All Guwahati Students� Union at the Judges Field here on Friday.

On the occasion, the Bihu flag was hoisted by noted litterateur Upendra Barkataky while AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath unfurled the organisation�s flag. AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi paid tributes to the martyrs. Students of Handique Girls� College presented two chorus � Srimoyi Asomi and Hei Swahid.

During the programme which was attended by a number of artistes, sportspersons, litterateurs and prominent citizens, the students� body felicitated noted personalities for their contribution to the State�s social life. Among them were Padmashree Eli Ahmed, JN Goswami, Sahitya Akademi Award winner Jnan Pujari, Anjali Basumatary, Gita Upadhyay, Harapriya Barukial Borgohain, Rashmi Narzary, Tapeshwar Sarma, Jnan Bahadur Chettri, Dr Birham Gri Basumatary, Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar recipient Prarthana Saikia and Bijit Goyari, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winner Saradi Saikia, Seujpriya Borthakur Goswami and Shilpika Bordoloi, who had received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, Lalit Kala Akademi awardee Bipul Chandra Das, National award recipients Dr Santana Bordoloi, Sanjeev Sabhapandit, Utpal Kumar Das, Jatin Bora, Adil Hussain, Ramen Bora, Shibanu Bora, Jaicheng Jai Dohotia, Dip Choudhury, Arman Ahmed and Arjun awardee Siva Thapa respectively.

A number of prominent troupes participated in the Mukali Bihu. A group from Karbi Cultural Society also performed the traditional Karbi dance Ritnong Chingdi, while Rabha artistes also presented their numbers. Children dressed in traditional Bihu attire joined the Bihu groups as they performed in the programme. A special programme was organised in memory of lyricist Keshab Mahanta, Hemen Hazarika and Dwijen Mohan Sarma. Singers Manjyotshna Mahanta, Rupam Bhuyan, Subhasana Dutta and Bina Bhagawati performed at the programme.
