AGARTALA, Sept 20 - Supporters of Indigenous Peoples� Front of Tripura (IPFT) brutally hacked to death a journalist � Santanu Bhowmik (23) at Mandai under Jirania subdivision today.
Three persons, including a Forester also suffered serious injuries in the incident.
Tension was brewing in Mandai and surrounding areas over the past few days as unruly IPFT supporters had been pressing CPI (M) cadres and workers under the banner of the party�s tribal front �Gana Mukti Parishad� (GMP) not to participate in the GMP rally here�on Tuesday.
Despite the threats and intimidations, a large number of GMP workers and supporters had attended yesterday�s rally. In retaliation, armed IPFT workers and supporters started ransacking the homes of GMP workers and beating them up in Mandai area from this morning.�
As the tension mounted, Santanu, cameraman of a local cable TV channel- �Dinraat� was targeted by the IPFT supporters and was hit on the head with a lethal weapon. The unruly IPFT workers then dragged him to the roadside and brutally hacked him to death on the spot.
At least twenty police, TSR personnel and Forest department officials sustained injuries in the attack and were admitted to a local hospital. Three were admitted to GBP Hospital as their condition was stated to be critical.
Angered by the incident, journalists gheroaed Chief Minister Manik Sarkar�s official residence later in the evening demanding immediate arrest of the killers before the cremation of the body.
