Jorhat take home Nuruddin Trophy

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, March 5 Jorhat became champions in the Plate Group Senior Inter District Cricket Championship and captured the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy. In the two-day final of the championship at Nehru Stadium here, Jorhat handed an innings and 36-run drubbing to Tezpur.

Resuming their first innings at 203 for nine, Jorhat added another 30 runs to their first innings and were all out for 233.

Tezpur, which were skittled out for 79 in the first innings, again fell to the guile of Jorhat left arm spinner Istiyak Ali and were all out for 118 in their second knock. Istiyak again came out with a rich six-wicket haul and his total match figure was 12 for 51. Like in the first innings, four Tezpur batsmen failed to open their accounts while three were out before reaching double figures. Poor application of technique cost them dear as most of the Tezpur batsmen could not concentrate on the pitch to read opponent bowlers. In the closing function, Assam Cricket Association president and State Public Health Minister Gautam Roy, and ACA secretary Bikash Baruah appealed to the players to develop their games so that Assam could perform well in the national level tournaments.

Roy, along with ACA vice- president and BCCI member Babul Hore, ACA officials Bishnuram Nunisa, Dilip Choudhury, sports organiser Amal Baruah gave away the trophies to teams and individuals.

Jorhat team received Rs 20,000 along with the trophy while Tezpur became richer by Rs 15,000.

Bhaskar Pratim Bora and Debendra Sukla Vaidya were the umpires of the final while Anupam Das was the scorer.
