Jorhat people stage rail blockade

By Correspondent

JORHAT, May 6 In protest against the railway authoritys alleged negligence towards fulfilment of their demands, hundreds Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and several local citizens blocked the rail route in the Na Ali area of the town from 1:55 pm to 3:25 pm on Tuesday delaying the return of the Guwahati-bound Janshatabdi Express train by about 90 minutes.

We asked the Railways to provide the service of Rajdhani Express and some other daily trains to the passengers of Jorhat. But they are not paying heed to us. Though the Jorhat station was declared a class one station in the country, passengers here are deprived of proper train services and several other required facilities, said AJYCP district president Siva Kalita.

According to protestors, the railway authorities have not initiated the construction of a railway flyover in the accident-prone areas on the Na Ali railway gate for years, though the budget allocation for its construction was made some years back. Moreover, they pointed out that several people have encroached railway land near the Jorhat Town station to raise buildings there.

The Railways should construct platforms in those areas, said Siva Kalita. We have also submitted a memorandum to the general manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway listing several important issues relating to basic infrastructure and passenger amenities, and we hope that he would take necessary measures to fulfil those demands, he added.
