Jeng Bihu staged at Gauripur

GAURIPUR, May 5 � Jeng Bihu, a popular traditional dance form participated only by the womenfolk, was staged at the historic Mahamaya playground here during the five-day-long Rongali Bihu celebrations recently.

The Barhamthuri Jeng Bihu troupe, consisting of 13 women in the age group 30 to 65, staged this attractive Jeng Bihu before a packed house of around 8,000 enthusiastic people of greater Gauripur area.

The participants were Praneswari Majumdar, Lina Konwar Ray, Manita Barua, Junu Das, Trishna Saharia, Maina Saharia, Birala Bala Das Sharma, Rita Rani Ramchiari Brahma, Sabita Ray, Anjali Goswami, Malabika Barua Ghosh, Bhanita Barua and Ranu Ray.

Some of them played traditional musical instruments like gogona, toka, etc., and sang unitedly a song composed by Naina Saharia and Lina Konwar Ray. Last year also, the troupe performed Jeng Bihu at Golakganj on the occasion of Rongali Bihu.
