Jawan kills family members, commits suicide in Tripura

AGARTALA,�May 8 - A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan today shot his wife and two children dead before committing suicide by shooting himself from an SLR at Subhashnagar in the south-east part of the city.

Manik Lal Ghosh (35), posted as a wireless operator at Gokul Nagar, 15 km from the capital town, was stated to have consumed a large quantity of liquor in the rear camp of the State Police Hospital, where he had halted after leaving the battalion headquarters. He hacked and shot to death his wife, Ratna Ghosh (32), and two children - Deepraj Ghosh (13) and Debasmita Ghosh (8) - before shooting himself dead. The incident took place at his residence in the Subhashnagar area under the West Agartala Police Station.

A large police contingent has rushed to the spot and further investigation is on. Police sources could not confirm how the jawan of the 1st Bn TSR had procured a firearm like the SLR. Local people said that the jawan might have been very disturbed due to his prolonged stay away from home and relatives.

When contacted, the SP of West district, Ajit Pratap Singh said that the police are trying to find out how Ghosh had got the SLR as he was posted as a wireless operator. An investigation has already begun,� he added.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has expressed concern over the incident. He has directed DGP AK Sukla to conduct an inquiry into how the TSR jawan fled from the battalion headquarters at Gokul Nagar and committed the heinous crime before killing himself.
