Jamirs call to transform Naga society

By correspondent

DIMAPUR, Aug 3 Former Nagaland Chief Minister and veteran politician SC Jamir has sounded a wake up call to the Naga youth to bring about a transormation to the otherwise besmirched Naga society.

Painting a grim picture of the direction to which the Naga society is presently marching, Jamir said the prevailing condition in the State is such that it has become a grave risk to speak out the truth, which, he said, indicates a society at its lower ebb.

The former Governor of Goa and Maharashtra questioned, What is a society, government or a tribe where one cannot speak out the truth to anybody?

He also lamented that bribery and corruption are dominating the Naga psyche, while remarking that it is now-a-days considered an honour among the Nagas to demand or accept bribe and induce corruption. Not mincing any words, he said, We have become a band of thieves, robbers, liars and murderers.

The veteran politician was speaking at the Tsungremong festival celebration organised by the Ao Kaketshir Telongjem and Ao Youth Forum Diphupar.

He gave a clarion call to the Naga youth stating that it is time for them to wake up, open their eyes and go about cleansing all the evils ailing the Naga society and to strive for truth as it existed during the time of our forefathers. The most vital responsibility for the youth at this moment is to speak out the truth, tell their people what is good and bad, right and wrong, he articulated.

Also remarking on the current Naga political scenario, Jamir maintained that while talks of unity and integration abounds, the true picture as witnessed is all about division and disunity. Is disunity a sign of strength, is division a sign of strength? he questioned and expressed concern that Nagas are becoming weaker and weaker by the day.

Going by the current scenario, Jamir asserted that neither the political parties nor the Church would be able to do anything to bring about a change to Naga society. He exhorted the Ao Nagas in particular to take leadership and lead the Naga youth towards rekindling the torch of the forfathers.

If you do not initiate towards bringing transformation in the society now, the world will not be pleasant to live in during your time, he predicted, adding, Take this as an earnest appeal and counsel from your elders.
