NAGAON, March 21 The State Jamiat-Ulema-E-Hind, (Ragibi faction) has welcomed the steps taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to prepare photo-identity cards in Assam.

The State unit appealed to its grassroot organisations to extend all possible help for preparing correct photo-identity cards.

The Jamiat also appealed that most D-voters be declared as Indian citizens by the court. The Jamiat therefore made a plea to include them in the photo-identity cards preparation process which is going to be completed within a few months.

The above was stated in a press release issued jointly by Abdul Jalil Ragibi (president) and Abdur Rashid (secretary) of the State unit of Jamiat.

The Jamiat-Ulema-E-Hind also condoled the death of Hafiz Siddique Ahmed, who was a leader of the central Jamiat and a devoted Congress activist of UP. He was a minister of UP State and former MP, besides general secretary of the UP State Jamiat. He was 82 years old.

Maulana Azhar Madani and Maulana Hasan Madani also condoled the death of Hafiz Siddique Ahmed. The Jamiat prayed for the deceaseds eternal peace.

In the meantime, work for preparation of photo-identity cards has started in Nagaon from March 15 last. This was informed by Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Dr P. Ashok Babu in a press meet at his conference hall. The programme was started with the training of AERO and BLO (Booth-level Officers) and discussion with political parties.

The concerned forms will be distributed door to door from May 15. The forms will be filled up by the electorate and a coloured photo of the size 3.5 4.5 cm will have to be pasted at the appropriate place on the form. BLOs are responsible for distributing, and collecting the forms, the DC added.

No electorate will permitted to use forms issued in the name of other persons. If any form is lost, then the person has to approach the BLO for a fresh form.

The DC appealed to the media and common people to extend their cooperation for preparing correct photo-identity cards. Media persons pointed out same practical issues in the meet, while the DC assured to look in to the matter. ADC Ashim Kumar Saikia, incharge election officer, Sangita Saikia, DIPRO Rajib Saikia and others were present in the meet.
