Jailbreak accused alleges abduction

By Raju Das

SHILLONG, Aug 6 An accused in the Shillong jailbreak case allegedly managed to save his life from miscreants who abducted him with an intention to eliminate him.

Sankyntiewlang Decruze, who was released on bail recently, said he was abducted by miscreants at gunpoint on his way home on August 3 but barely managed to save his life.

Decruze earlier had testified before the D Biswas Commission and revealed several startling facts that pointed an accusing finger at Union Water Resource Minister Vincent H Pala, Thomas Nongtdu, senior Congress member and others, in the jailbreak case.

According to Decruze and other inmates who escaped from the Shillong district jail on May 31, 2008, the daring escape was sponsored by high-profile politicians and businessmen.

The ringleader of the jailbreak, Fullmoon Dhar allegedly having links with politicians and businessmen, was killed in a fake police encounter two days after the jailbreak. Others were nabbed by the police from Jaintia Hills district and were lodged in the jail again.

The Biswas Commission was on the verge of submitting its report but Biswas quit days before the report submission date, thus raising uncomfortable questions about pressure from high-profile people in the case.

After Decruze was released on bail on July 26, he claimed that two persons abducted him at gunpoint from Mawlong Hat and took him away in a green Maruti car. Later, they held him in a forested area in Lynti Rim, Mawlai. He, however, managed to escape after the miscreants were trying to call their accomplices in the place.

Meanwhile, Steering Committee Against Murder of Democracy, a conglomeration of social bodies here, has filed an FIR against the alleged abduction and murder attempt. It said that vested interest groups want to silence Decruse so that people in high positions are not exposed.
