Itanagar police busts �ATM� racketeers

ITANAGAR, Dec 11 � The Itanagar police has busted a �fake� ATM card racket by arresting four racketeers from Assam�s Barpeta district more than two months after nabbing one Md Shariful Islam.

The arrested persons have been identified as Md Mukibul Islam, Habib Ahmed, Razzaqul Islam and Rafikul Islam.

SP (Capital) Surender Kumar, said here yesterday the police had cracked the �unauthorised withdrawals through ATM card racket� case by arresting the four.

The SP said in the months of June-July last, several complaints were received from SBI customers complaining of unauthorised withdrawals from their accounts, following which, two separate cases were registered at Itanagar PS and investigation launched.

Md Shariful Islam, who was arrested on September 25, during interrogation had disclosed the modus-operandi and the names of his associates. A police team went to Barpeta and arrested the accused persons on the wee hours of December 9 from different locations under Sorbhog PS and Howly OP.

A Samsung laptop, one mobile handset, two memory cards were seized from the house of one of the culprits.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they had visited Itanagar on several occasions during May-July. They used to visit different ATM booths at Itanagar and collect SBI customers� ATM card password and card number from innocent customers.

After collecting ATM card details, the accused persons used to SMS the details to their associates at Barpeta who immediately made withdrawals by ordering electronic goods like high-end mobile handsets, LED TVs, Bluetooth Head sets, etc through online payment gateways.

By the time the actual account holder realised about the withdrawals and intimated the bank their account was empty.

Till now, Rs 12 lakh (approximately) had been looted from around 20 SBI customers, informed the SP. Investigation is on to nab the remaining culprits. The accused were produced before the Court here yesterday which remanded them to seven days� police custody.
