IT raids in State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 11 The Income Tax department today conducted simultaneous raids in several parts of the State, including Guwahati and Hailakandi. In Guwahati, the raids were carried out in Survey and Beltola areas.

The raids were conducted in business firms of a group of contractors who reportedly operate in close association with the Excise department. A city-based hotel, according to sources, is also expected to be raided, though official confirmation in this connection could not be gathered till the time of filing this report.

IT sources informed that the searches were carried out based on information about large-scale evasion of taxes.

Preliminary investigation had revealed that the contractors, who are facing the charges of keeping assets disproportionate to their dealings on paper, have cost the State exchequer a huge sum of revenue by resorting to tax evasion, an IT official said, adding, Several documents relating to the income and assets were seized during the searches.

The sources further informed that the department would continue its operation in the next couple of days.
