Issue moving in right direction: CM

GUWAHATI, Oct 29 - The Government of Assam has appointed Pallav Bhattacharjee, Additional DGP (SB), Assam as the new mediator to liaise with the organisations agitating for ST status of six communities of the State.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced this while discussing the progress on the issue of ST status with the leadership of these organisations in a meeting at Brahmaputra State Guest House here last night, an official release said.

Reiterating the State Government�s commitment to the cause of ST status to those communities, the Chief Minister said that he had already taken up the matter with the Union Home Minister and �the issue is moving in the right direction.�

The Chief Minister assured the organisations that he would call on the Union Home Minister along with the agitating organisations to discuss the Report of the Recommendation Committee after the Lok Sabha and Assembly byelections were over in the State.

Stating that the government�s commitment to the cause is manifested by several rounds of discussions it had with these organisations recently, Sonowal called for their cooperation and patience for a positive outcome.

He also requested the organisations to reconsider their agitational programme and withdraw the bandh called by them.

Representatives of the organisations expressed satisfaction on the assurance given by the Chief Minister and informed him that they would reconsider their agitational programme keeping in mind the greater interest of the six communities.
