IPFT allegation against BJP

By The Assam Tribune

AGARTALA, April 25 - The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP in the State, on Wednesday alleged that goons of the saffron party assaulted two of its polling agents during polling in Dhalai district on Tuesday. The IPFT also put up a road blockade in the district to protest against the alleged assault, which was denied by the BJP.

Polling for the East Tripura constituency was held on Tuesday. Though the voting was supposed to be held on April 18, the Election Commission deferred it to April 23 in view of the law-and-order situation.

Officer-in-charge of Gandacherra Police Station, KK Uchoi, said the IPFT workers blocked the road for several hours. The party is demanding immediate arrest of the accused, he said, adding that BJP supporters also held a road blockade on Tuesday night.

When contacted, BJP spokesperson Ashoke Sinha said the IPFTs allegation was baseless, and that no BJP supporter or activist attacked any IPFT worker. PTI
