IOA to set up new AOA panel soon

GUWAHATI, July 27 - The newly appointed ad-hoc committee of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA), headed by Dr SM Bali, joint secretary of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), will oversee governance and managing affairs of the AOA and is likely to set up the State Olympic body at the earliest.

Addressing the media here today, Dr Bali said, �In the next meeting, we will fix the committee list and the election process will start after August 15.� The other members of the three-member AOA ad-hoc committee are Sunil Elangbam, secretary, Manipur Olympic Association and Mushtaque Ahmed, president of Hockey India. �I am also thankful to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his cooperation and he has urged me to hold the elections in a democratic way,� Dr Bali added.

The decision to dissolve the Assam Olympic Association committee was taken at the annual general meeting (AGM) of the Indian Olympic Association held in New Delhi on December 22, 2018. The last AGM of the AOA was held on July 13, 2013 for a term of four years. Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his Cabinet colleague Rakibul Hussain were reelected as the president and the secretary of the association respectively in that meeting. The four-year term of the office-bearers of AOA headed by Tarun Gogoi, already�ended on July 13, 2017.

Dr Bali further revealed that the AOA body under Tarun Gogoi did a wonderful job by setting up infrastructure during the 2007 National Games. They are also cooperating with the IOA and promised to hand over all the documents in time which will help the ad-hoc committee to start the election process for forming a new committee.
