Int�l chess tourney gets under way

GUWAHATI, March 22 - The 3rd Assam Downtown University International Open Rating Chess Tournament got under way here today.

Altogether 116 players from across the country, which includes 71 International rated players are in fray in the championship. Y Dhanabir Singh of Manipur and Apollosana Mangang Rajkumar also of Manipur were given top two seedings. Santanu Borpatra Gohain, Mrinal Kakati (both Assam) and CH Meghna of Kerala are seeded from 3rd to 5th respectively.

The tournament was inaugurated by Bandana Dutta, Dean of Study, Assam Downtown University in the presence of Preeti Saikia, Managing Trustee, Dr Bhabendra Nath Saikia Children Welfare Trust; Jyotisman Datta, Managing Trustee, Assam Downtown University; Dr KN Sarma, former president, Rotary Club, Dispur along with a host of sportspersons and officials.

The tournament is being conducted by Biswajit Bharadwaj as the chief arbiter and he is assisted by Lakhyajyoti Saikia, Swaraj Buragohain and Amit Kumar Biswas as deputy Arbiter.

The tournament, which carries a total prize fund of Rs 2 lakh is being organised by Assam Chess Club and supported by Rotary Club, Dispur, stated a release.
