International Day for Biological Diversity held

SHILLONG, May 22 - The International Day for Biological Diversity was observed here with the stress on maintaining a balance in the biodiversity for a sustainable ecosystem.

The event was observed under the theme �Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health� at a function held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium here. The event was organised by the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board and the Department of Forests and Environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Forests and Environment Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said it is important to maintain balance in the biodiversity for a sustainable ecosystem.

�As we are interdependent on one another, we have to renew our commitment to preserve our rich biodiversity,� he said. The minister raised an alarm on the fast dwindling of rare species.

Rymbui said that there is a need to realise the value of organisms and species, understand the gravity of the situation, and work towards preserving the environment and the rich biodiversity for the future generations.

The programme was organised in order to generate awareness among the people, particularly the student community, on the rich biodiversity of the State and the importance of preserving it.
