International Day for Biological Diversity celebrated

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 22 - Aaranyak, in collaboration with Panbari High School, Chandrapur, celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity on the school campus today.

Dr Purnima Devi Barman, Green Oscar winner 2017, and Manas Kumar Bhattacharjya, programme manager of Aaranyak, interacted with the students.

The school though located in the city lacks even the basic amenities and is functioning without electricity.

On the occasion, 10 teachers, including the headmaster, Ranjit Basumatary, and three students who secured star marks in the HSLC exam were felicitated by Aaranyak.

During her interaction, Purnima urged the students to love their natural surroundings and to be action oriented. We all can contribute towards the well-being of nature and biodiversity through our actions in our own way, she said.

She introduced the students to the different levels of biodiversity such as specific diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystems diversity in a simple and lucid way.

Diversity is life and humankind cannot exist without diversity. We need diversity everywhere and biological diversity serves us with our needs. We all are interlinked with one another through the web of life. The web of life is the fact of life and we have to save our web of life to save both nature and our future, she said.

As part of her efforts to sensitise the young generations on nature and biodiversity and motivate them into conservation, Purnima will visit a hundred schools, especially those that lack proper exposure to such things.

Manas Bhattacharjee explained the students about various aspects of wildlife.

Students actively participated in the programme and pledged to work for conservation of the natural world and biodiversity.
