Inter-school science model contest held at Dergaon

DERGAON, Feb 4 - A large number of students participated in an inter-school science model competition organised by the Atal Tinkering Laboratory (ATL) at Kuralguri Higher Secondary School (KHSS) near Dergaon on Saturday.

The ATL, it may be mentioned, is the first of its kind in a Government school in Golaghat district and was set up under the aegis of Niti Aayog to inculcate scientific temperament among the school students.

Inaugurating the competition, Assam state coordinator of National Children Science Congress (NCSC) Ramen Gogoi urged the students to inculcate scientific temperament from an early age.

Delivering his speech at the inaugural session, which was chaired by the school Principal Jyoti Kumari Sarma and moderated by senior teacher Jiban Bora, the state coordinator of NCSC also explained the utility of ATL in the true sense.

Addressing the gathering, science popularisation activist-cum-senior journalist Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika explained the need for propagating scientific awareness to curb superstitious beliefs like witch-hunting etc.

Among the 28 science models presented by 56 students from different schools in the competition, the model titled �Flood Indication� by Nayanjyoti Hazarika and Kaustav Jyoti Bora of Indranee Devi Higher Secondary School was awarded the first prize while the model titled �Extraction of Agar (Sanchi)� by Abdul Haque and Mamud Mustafid of Batiparia High School, besides the model titled �U-Turn Safety from Road Accidents� by Ankita Bora and Subhankar Sekhar Dutta of KHSS were awarded the second and third prizes respectively.

On the other hand, in the intra-school- level competition, the model titled �Natural Mosquito Repellent� by Ankit Aakash Barthakur and Piyush Tanoy Bharadwaj was awarded the first prize while the model �Measures for Cleanliness� by Lovely Bora and Anamika Bora, along with the model titled �Robotic Hand� by Prantim Bora and Kumud Bora were awarded the second and third prizes respectively.

The prizes were distributed at the closing ceremony which was chaired by Principal Jyoti Kumari Sarma and moderated by teacher Rupali Mahanta. The function was also addressed by the judges of the competition, namely the secretary of Nature organisation AASHRAY and journalist Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika, Vice-Principal of KHSS Prasanta Pradip Hazarika and subject teacher of Gurjogania HS School Atul Dutta.
