Inter-school chess tourney under way

SILCHAR, April 29 - In a bid to encourage young chess players from Barak Valley, a two-day inter-school chess tournament organised by the Silchar Chess Player�s Parents� Forum got under way on Sunday.

Over 400 students from various schools of Barak Valley are participating in the tournament being held on the premises of DNNK Higher Secondary School here. The tournament began with an exhibition match between Cachar Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan and noted journalist and chief mentor of the tournament Nilotpal Choudhury.

Rajib Gupta, president of the forum said that participants in the tournament have been grouped in five categories in the age group of U-9 to U-17. �The tournament is being conducted following the approval of the All Assam Chess Association and Cachar District Chess Association. We have the support from the District Sports Authority. Also the tournament has a nationally certified arbiter to follow the proceedings,� Gupta informed.
