GUWAHATI, March 10 - Bengali script is used to write Assamese language, that is what the Government of India as well as the California-based Unicode Consortium think. This position taken at digitisation of scripts makes Assamese a patois or sub-language of Bengali. The injustice done to the distinct and independent Assamese script which has developed through the ages, has been protested. The demand for its recognition and a separate slot in Universal Standard has been placed.
Recently (on March 8), Axomia lipir aitijya aru antarjyatik maan, a small book in Assamese written by Aziz-ul Haque, was released by Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, ex-Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, at the Guwahati Press Club here.
Along with the book release ceremony, a seminar on Assamese script in digital world was also held, where Prof Choudhury, along with Dr Sikhar Kumar Sarma, ex-Head of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology and presently Registrar of Cotton College State University, Dr Satyendra Narayan Goswami, ex-Rabindranath Tagore Professor of Gauhati University and Dr Satyakam Phukan, a general surgeon, enlightened the audience about the burning issue of Assamese writing system in Unicode.
