GUWAHATI, Dec 28 - Swachh Survekshan 2018, a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) to encourage cities to improve their urban sanitation, was launched here today by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Commissioner Monalisa Goswami and actors Kopil Bora and Sagarika Goswami were present at the event.

The objective of Swachh Survekshan is to encourage large-scale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities cleaner and better places to live in.

In her keynote address GMC Commissioner Goswami said the Corporation is taking several initiatives to make Guwahati the cleanest city.

She also mentioned the Swachhata App, with the help of which citizens can register their complaints and the authorities will immediately look into them within a specified time-frame. Locals and tourists in Guwahati city can now locate toilets from any location using the Google toilet locator.

It was also announced that a city-based survey would be conducted by the GMC to assess the cleanest school, hotel, hospital, market association and resident welfare association (RWA) in the city and recognise the winners in the said categories.

In this regard, Mayor Sarania mentioned source segregation of the municipal waste. Every week, Tuesday and Friday are kept to segregate dry waste and wet waste. For this 58 NGOs are appointed and divided in various areas for different works related to cleanliness, he said, requesting the members of society and residents to spread the message amongst the general public so that Guwahati can become the cleanest city in the entire country.

On the occasion, actor Kopil Bora was introduced as the brand ambassadors for Swachh Survekshan 2018. I am glad to be part of this initiative and would like to be called the goodwill ambassador, rather than brand ambassador. From my end, I shall support and promote Swachhata in any way I can, Bora said.

Additionally, the survey also intends to foster a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities to improve their service delivery to citizens, towards creating cleaner cities.
