Initiative for granting ST status welcomed

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, March 7 - The united forum of the six communities Koch-Rajbongshis, Moran, Mattack, Chutia, Tai Ahom and Adivasis of Assam under the nomenclature Soi Jonogustiyo Aikyo Mancha have appreciated the initiative of the Centre by calling for modalities preparation for inclusion of the six tribes in the list of Scheduled Tribes. However, if the Centres order of modalities preparation is found to be a political gimmick of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in view of the election, the act of the Government of India will be unpardonable, the leaders of the forum said.

Addressing newsmen here today, Arunjyoti Moran, president, Moran Chatra Sanstha, Uday Shankar Mohan, president of the All Assam Mattak Yuba Chatra Sanmilan and Rajen Kumar, president, Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) along with other leaders of Chutia and Tai Ahom communities today stressed that the deadline of May 31, 2016 for preparation of the modalities must be met at all cost.

The Government of India must ensure that the instituted committee prepares the modalities within the stipulated deadline. Any further extension of the deadline will not be tolerated by the people of Assam, Arunjyoti Moran said.

The leaders also warned the political parties against playing politics over the scheduling issue. The leaders must not make us feel that the process of granting scheduled status is done only to reap political benefit in the elections, Uday Shankar Mohan said.
