By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 14 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday emphasized the need for promoting infrastructure development through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and said that PPP will to a great extent improve perceptions about the region and bring in more investment.

Inaugurating a PPP workshop at NEDFi House here organized by the government of Assam, Gogoi said that PPPs ensure efficiency in the service delivery system and technological innovation apart from providing cost effective solutions and greater employment opportunities in the infrastructure sector. Gogoi also launched a webbased PPP database on the occasion.

Dr Arvind Mayaram, additional secretary, ministry of rural development, government of India, speaking on the occasion, pointed out that under the present economic conditions and the challenges thrown by globalization, it has become pertinent to attract investment from the private sector for providing public service and infrastructure.

Dr Mayaram said that in the coming years a huge investment will be required for infrastructure development and as neither the Central nor the State governments were in a position to meet this demand, the private sector has to be roped in.

Other speakers lauded the response of the govt of Assam towards PPPs and stressed the need for identifying the areas where the private sector can pitch in. The govt of Assam has notified a PPP policy and at present several projects have been launched and many are on the pipeline. Four of the projects have been completed.
