Indian citizens not to be harassed: CM

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 19 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today told the Assembly that no Indian citizen would be allowed to be harassed in the matter of detection of illegal foreign nationals living in the State.

Replying to questions raised by Aminul Islam (AIUDF), the Chief Minister asserted that it was the responsibility of the State Government to protect Indian citizens from any harassment.

Gogoi also said that the State Government told the Election Commission (EC) that the EC had no right to brand anyone as foreigner, and that the matter was challenged by the State Government in the court. He said that the issue of D voters was a legal issue and all the political parties should join hands to resolve the matter.

Jahan Uddin (AIUDF) alleged that the genuine Indian citizens were being harassed after categorizing them as D voters. He said that those people were facing an uncertain future, and even their children were finding difficulty in pursuing their education.
