India negotiating motor vehicles pact with Myanmar

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Sept 13 - Government of India is still negotiating for a Motor Vehicles Agreement with Myanmar for facilitating movement of vehicles across the borders after the opening of entry and exit land route, according to Sweta Singh, First Secretary (Eco & Com) & head of chancery at Indian Embassy at Yangon, Myanmar.

Sweta Singh said, Signing of Motor Vehicles Agreement with Myanmar would a be big step. Once the agreement is ready vehicles can go across the border, not only the people. But that is still under negotiation, she added.

She was interacting with a team of Manipur media persons, who are presently on a week-long sponsored press tour in Myanmar to explore ways to improve relationship between the people living across the border in the wake of Indias Act East Policy, on Wednesday.

India had in 2015 reportedly proposed seamless movement of cargo, scheduled (bus) and non-scheduled (private) passenger vehicles between Moreh in Manipur and Mae Sot in Thailand. This was similar to the Bhutan-Bangladesh-India-Nepal motor vehicles pact inked outside SAARC in June 2015.

The much awaited India-Myanmar border land road was opened at Indo-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, Moreh along the International border on August 8.

The First Secretary also informed that the Government of India is also re-constructing 69 World War-era bridges on Tamu-Kyigone-Kalewa section in Myanmar. The works will be started once the rainy season is over, she added. The works are scheduled to be completed in 36 months.

A business summit of the two countries will also be held in October this year, she said. The focus is now on medical tourism and education sector, she informed. There is also a proposal for introduction of flights between Manipur and Myanmar cities, she added.
