India awaits Myanmars response on bus link

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 The Ministry of Transport and Highways today said it is awaiting comments from the Myanmar government on the proposed bus-link between India and the neighbouring nation.

We are waiting for the comments from Myanmar government on the proposed bus link between India and Myanmar through Manipur. We have requested them to pace up the process, Road Secretary Vijay Chhibber told reporters on the sidelines of CII-ADB conference here.

As per the proposal, India and Myanmar will be linked through a bus service between Moreh in Manipur and Mandalay in Myanmar. The proposal was mooted a couple of years ago.

The construction of a highway from Imphal to Mandalay was proposed with the idea of reducing distance and facilitate better connectivity between the two nations.

A similar link is also being envisaged between India and Bangladesh via Agartala, Chhibber said.

Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid highlighted the need to improve connectivity between India and the Mekong region comprising countries such as Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. He laid stress on the importance of stepping up the level of infrastructure financing in all the countries of the region to promote connectivity in terms of land, maritime and air.

Khurshid also requested the Asian Development Bank and other multilateral institutions to boost their engagement with the region in this regard. PTI
