Independent MDC joins NPP-led GHPA

By Correspondent

TURA, April 7 - The Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) on Wednesday received a big boost after independent MDC of Balachanda, Sofiur Rehman joined the NPP-led alliance. Rahman was earlier a part of the opposition-led alliance and had supported the Congress.

In the 29-member district council, the ruling alliance, GHPA had 15 MDCs while the opposition had 14 members. Rahmans decision to withdraw support to the Congress boosted the strength of the ruling NPP to 16 with Boston Marak as chairman of the GHADC. The opposition comprise seven Congress, five Independents and a lone NCP member and were allegedly trying to break the NPP-led alliance.

I am happy that NPP has welcomed me. People in plain belt area of Garo hills have raised their anger against the Congress as the opposition has failed to protect the rights of the non-tribals, said Sofiur when contacted.
