Independence Day celebrated

DIBRUGARH, Aug 16 - The 71st Independence Day celebration was marked with colourful programmes organised by the district administration, educational institutions and government offices in the district.

The central event was organised at Chowkidinghee ground under the aegis of the district administration where PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya unfurled the Tricolour.

The minister in his speech recalled Mahatma Gandhi and all those martyrs who laid down their lives fighting the British for the freedom of the country. He paid respect to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Circuit House and led the swahid tarpan at Chowkidinghee ground before hoisting the flag.

A march-past was conducted where various contingents of the police, home guards and students took part. Band display, cultural programme and felicitations programme were also held on the occasion.

At North Lakhimpur: The 71st Independence Day of the nation was celebrated across Lakhimpur district along with the rest of the country on Tuesday. The official function of the day was held at the playground of North Lakhimpur Government HS School where the Deputy Commissioner, Barun Bhuyan, unfurled the Tricolour.

He also inspected the guard of honour and took the salute of the parade. Troops of Assam Police, APBN, NCC, and Scouts and Guides took part in the Independence Day parade.
