Indefinite Dhemaji bandh begins

By Correspondent

DHEMAJI, Dec 3 The first day of indefinite Dhemaji bandh jointly called by several political parties including AGP and Congress with active participation of some ethnic students organisations like TMPK, AJYCP in protest against the act of reserving 6 ZPC seats in Dhemaji Zila Parishad for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates in the ensuing Panchayat elections passed of peacefully today.

The first days bandh from 6 am to 6 pm totally paralysed normal life in Dhemaji town and its surrounding areas including Machkhowa badly affecting business activities, official attendance, educated institutions and vehicular movement. During the day, all the financial, educational and commercial establishments remained closed. Similarly, no four wheelers were seen plying on the road except a few two-wheelers on examination and medical purposes.

Official sources revealed that there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the district.

The protesters have alleged that Dhemaji DC, conspiring with local MLA Sumitra Doley Patir and Pradan Boruah has illegally reserved 6 ZPC seats of Dhemaji Zila Parishad for ST candidates leaving only one seat unreserved in the Parishad for the forthcoming Panchayat elections. Therefore they have started from today an indefinite Dhemaji bandh agitation demanding immediate cancellation of reservation of six seats for ST candidates and to declare unreserved atleast 3 seats including Dhemaji, Machkhowa and Sissiborgaon out of the total 7 seats of the Zila Parishad.
