TURA, Oct 18 - Saturday brought a new twist to the drama on the formation of an Executive Committee of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) after the Independent candidates who had pledged their support to the NPP suddenly withdrawing support.
Sources said, six independents barring Sofiur Rehman who won from Balachanda have got together after the three that pledged their support withdrew and joined the other three independents.
The NPP had announced on Friday that it was ready to stake claim with support from three independents Kurosh Marak, Devier Sangma and Mark Goera Marak along with support from BJP and GNC.
The man of the moment, who may just play the most crucial part in the formation of the next EC, Sofiur Rehman is in touch with NPP although he is yet to commit to being in board with the newly formed alliance Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA).
Sources close to six independents have confirmed that they have met on Saturday at the residence of independent candidate from Tura Rupert M Sangma. The six independent MDCs have decided not to support any party that has non-tribal MDCs in its fold.
The GHPA with 14 seats along with GNC and BJP requires just one more to ensure they are able to form the Executive Committee of the GHADC and Rehmans joining will ensure the numbers are met.
