By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, March 26 Independent candidate Toyang Chankong Chang defeated ruling NPF candidate Elan Chang by 2,272 votes in the adjourned election to the Tuensang Sadar-I Assembly Constituency held on March 23. The counting was held today. The Independent candidate polled 9,534 votes, while his NPF opponent polled 7,262 votes. Out of a total of 22,049 electorate, 16,040 cast their votes to choose their representative in a straight contest between the ruling NPF candidate and the Independent nominee.

The Congress had backed out of fielding a candidate following the demise of its candidate P Chuba Chang on February 22, a day before the polling day for the Nagaland Assembly election, because of which polling in the constituency was rescheduled.

A voter died on the day of polling on March 23 due to a stroke while waiting in queue to cast his vote.
