In 2 yrs calamities kill 45 people in Mizoram

AIZAWL, April 18 - In the past two years in Mizoram at least 45 people have died due to natural disasters or calamities with landslides alone claiming the highest toll at 27.

According to Statistical Handbook of Mizoram 2018 released recently, 17 people have died due to natural calamities during 2017-2018. Of these, 11 people were killed in landslides, two due to cyclones, three due to flood, while lightening claimed one life, the report said.

The Handbook said that, during 2016-2017, landslide had killed 16 people and seven people died due to flood, three people to lightning and one each were killed in cyclone and fire.

The entire State was affected by natural calamities in the past two years. At least 208 villages were affected by flood, damaging more than 740 houses during 2017-2018.

About 558 houses in 200 villages were destroyed by cyclone, while landslide occurred in 174 villages, causing damage to 267 houses. Besides, 67 houses were gutted by fire during the same period.

Altogether 811 villages across the State have been affected and about 1,800 houses destroyed by natural disasters during 2017-2018, the report said.
