Important road in pitiable condition

By CORRESPONDENT

JALUKBARI, Nov 12 - The PWD road connecting Sarabhati and Fatasil Ambari (Bishnupur main road), which is a major road of greater Guwahati, is in a pitiable condition, with potholes dotting almost the entire stretch of the road.

Vehicle manoeuvring on this important and busy road proves very difficult because of the huge potholes. This in turn makes it difficult for the students, elderly people and office-goers to reach their destinations on time.

The suffering people of the locality have resented the apathy of the government and the local MLA on the matter. A few months back they had even resorted to dharna and blocked the road to vent their ire. This prompted some top officials of the Kamrup (M) district administration and PWD to promise repair of the road within fifteen days. But the promise was not fulfilled, the locals alleged.

After the dharna, the PWD dumped a huge pile of stones and gravel on the roadside, without putting them to use till date. This has added to the discomfort of pedestrians and vehicles using the road.

The road was constructed in 2003 and since then only minor repairs have been carried out from time to time, which have proved far from satisfactory, the local people told this correspondent.

The drainage system too is not maintained well. As a result, a simple shower is enough to cause artificial flood on the road. The people also rued the fact that there are only three streetlights in the one kilometre-long road, which is an added worry for the commuters. Many people have even sustained injuries due to accidents on the dilapidated road. A few days back a 13-year-old boy who was on his way to school, sustained serious injury as he slipped on stones dumped on the roadside.

The senior citizens of the locality have appealed to the local MLA and the administration to take necessary steps for getting the road repaired without further delay.
