Importance of sustainable development goals highlighted

GUWAHATI, June 7 - The first divisional conclave on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Lower Assam Division was held at the Assam Administrative Staff College here recently.

The daylong programme was jointly organised by the Divisional Commissioner of Lower Assam Division, the State transformation and development department, the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro and the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara.

Deputy commissioners of eight districts of Lower Assam, along with senior government officials were present at the meeting.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu spoke on the importance of the SDGs and stressed that the goals can be achieved only when every member of civil society from the grassroots level upward is mobilised, motivated and transformed into an active stakeholder for achievement of these goals.

Delivering the keynote address, Ahmed Hussain, Divisional Commissioner of Lower Assam Division, emphasised the importance of achievement of the SDGs for the socio-economic development of the State.

Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia in his inaugural address expressed his views on the mission for achievement of the SDGs in Assam and emphasised the role of deputy commissioners in achievement of the seventeen goals of sustainable development.

He stressed the need to organise conclaves on SDGs at various levels to create awareness among the people in general.
