BARPETA, Sept 28 - The ruling Congress on Monday organized a protest demonstration demanding implementation of the Food Security Act in the State. Hundreds of party workers led by Dhiraj Deury, president of the Barpeta District Congress Committee, gathered in front of the office of the deputy commissioner here and demanded the implementation of the welfare scheme in the State.

They also termed the discontinuation of the postage stamps featuring former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi as a conspiracy of the BJP-led Central government and demanded a status quo in this regard.

The protest movement was also organized by the Sarukshetri Block Congress Committee at Sarthebari revenue circle office where several leaders were present. Rita Deka, a member of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and chairperson of the Assam State Marketing Board, alleged that Narendra Modi-led Central government has been favouring the interests of the rich and aristocratic society of the country, while turning a deaf ear to the needs of the poor.
