IMPHAL, June 27 - Academic activities of the Manipur University have remained suspended for the 29th day today following the students� agitation demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Adiya Prasad Pandey, varsity sources said, reports PTI.
The agitation has been spearheaded by the Manipur University Students� Union (MUSU) for the removal of the VC for his alleged failure to appoint members in important posts, lavish travelling and hampering academic functioning in the university, the sources added.
The VC of the Central university had earlier dismissed the allegations and claimed that the student functionaries were connected to militant bodies.
To take stock of the situation of the ongoing crisis, Joint Secretary, Department of Higher Education, HRD Ministry, VC Hosur visited Imphal on June 22 and met the student leaders and Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Ever since the agitation began, six deans have resigned citing the prevailing crisis. The Manipur unit of the Communist Party of India has also demanded VC�s resignation.
Correspondent adds: Meira Paibi, a women�s NGO, staged a torch rally at the Canchipur campus of Manipur University on Tuesday night, demanding an amicable solution to the ongoing crisis in the university. They are also supporting the ongoing student movement.
Intensifying the agitation demanding resignation of the Vice Chancellor, the Manipur University Students� Union, Manipur University Teachers� Association and Manipur University Staff Association jointly staged a sit-in protest in front of the university gate.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said that he is trying his best to end the crisis. He informed that a Joint Secretary of the HRD Ministry who recently visited the State to oversee the situation, has informed him that an inquiry is likely to be conducted to find out the facts relating to the allegations and bring about an amicable solution.
