Illegal saw mills busted in Darrang

MANGALDAI, Nov 20 - The officials under the North Kamrup Forest Division at Mangaldai busted two illegal saw mills, seized a smuggled timber-laden vehicle and recovered illegally sawn timber, altogether worth Rs 4 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, Forest Beat Officer Debabrata Sarma of the Mangaldai Forest Beat Office, a few days back, conducted an operation in Lalpool and Kopati areas of the district to raid two illegal saw mills � one owned by Khaibar Ali of Lalpool and the other by Sarafat Ali of Bagichakash, Kopati.

During the operation, the officials seized sawn timber worth around Rs 3 lakh. The team also intercepted a Tata DI vehicle bearing registration number AS 25 DC 3450 in Panbari area and recovered teak wood worth around Rs one lakh and seized the vehicle. Meanwhile, Beat Officer Sarma lodged an FIR at the Dalgaon Police Station in this regard.

However, the gang of timber smugglers had escaped much before the forest team arrived.
