IIT-G working towards infra upgrade: Director

GUWAHATI, June 25 - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, is working towards further upgradation of infrastructure for students and faculties, while also increasing focus on research and collaboration with various international institutions.

Delivering the Director's Report during the 20th Convocation of institute here today, IIT Guwahati Director Prof Gautam Biswas said that the institute is working towards creating more ways to "instruct, innovate and inspire."

The IIT Guwahati Director said that as per the Human Resources Development Ministry's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Indian Rankings 2018, IIT Guwahati ranked seventh among top engineering institutions and 12th among all the participating institutions and universities in the country.

Prof Biswas said that in order to further strengthen research-related infrastructure IIT Guwahati has purchased high-end machinery for its Central Instrument Facility, including an Atomic Force Microscope worth Rs 2.5 crore and a 9 KW Powder X-Ray Diffraction System worth Rs 80 lakh.

"The Computer and Communication Centre (of the institute) has augmented its facilities to provide better service in connectivity� Projects of the National Knowledge Network and ERNET are being actively pursued in the centre," he said.

He added that the total number of PhD students at IIT Guwahati has reached 1,934 this year, while the current faculty to PhD students' ratio is 4.58.

"There are 354 research projects in progress with a total sanctioned value of about Rs 322.7 crore. In the year under report, IIT Guwahati received 93 new projects with a sanctioned value of Rs 148 crore," said the IIT Guwahati Director.

The institute applied for 41 patents in 2017-18.

"A total of 98 new consultancy projects were carried out during the year� IIT Guwahati is facilitating established companies to set up their R&D centre inside the institute campus for industry-academia collaboration," he said, adding that three companies have already set up centres at the IIT Guwahati Research Park.

Faculty members of IIT Guwahati published 1,575 papers in journals and 665 papers in conference proceedings during the last fiscal.

Prof Biswas said that IIT Guwahati has set up collaborations with a number of universities across the world.

"IIT Guwahati at present has 124 national and international collaborations aimed at facilitating research collaborations, student and faculty exchange, joint PhD supervision, and other research related activities. The institute signed 19 new MoUs with various educational and research institutes in Japan, China, Taiwan, Cyprus, Switzerland, France, Germany, UK, Romania, Czech Republic, Australia, USA, Argentina and Brazil during the year under report," he said.

He added that IIT Guwahati is now one of the nine partners in the 'Innovative Asia Programme' initiated by the Japan International Cooperation Agreement (JICA) through the Embassy of Japan in India.

Prof Biswas said that many projects for expansion of hostel buildings, academic complex, residential buildings, guest houses and internal roads in the IIT Guwahati campus have been completed during recent times and some works are still in progress.

"Work in the Centre for Nanotechnology is expected to be completed by March 2019," he said.

Prof Biswas said that the institute's expenditure during 2017-18 went up to Rs 603 crore as against Rs 446 crore in 2016-17.

"The placement scenario at IIT Guwahati for the year 2017-18 has been impressive so far. A total of 120 companies from various categories and sectors participated in the recruitment process� Overall placement of all programmes is 61.49 per cent," he said. Altogether, 1450 students, including 584 Bachelor of Technology (B Tech), 45 Bachelor of Design (B Des), 26 Master of Arts (MA), 140 Master of Science (MSc), 388 Master of Technology (M Tech), 24 Master of Design (M Des), 11 Master of Science by Research (MS (R)) and 232 PhD, received their degrees at the Convocation today.
