GUWAHATI, July 22 The IIT Guwahati, the only educational institute from India to make it to the top 100 of the world's dynamic young universities, has strengthened and revamped its infrastructure to welcome the 20th batch of students into the campus.

Around 1,550 students are expected to join the institute for various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes over the next week taking the total number of students to around 5,200 in the campus.

IIT Guwahati has ten hostels, nine for boys and one for girls, besides a married scholars hostel to accommodate the students. A part of the second girls hostel under construction is being readied to house some of the girl students from this academic session.

The construction of the tenth boys hostel with 956 rooms is going on. Food courts, canteens, sports facilities for gymnasium, badminton, tennis, squash, volleyball, basketball, cricket field, football field, hockey ground, athletic ground and a swimming pool and various students clubs/societies for refining co-curricular talents are available within the campus for holistic development of a student, an IIT Guwahati official told The Assam Tribune.

The campus also has two banks with ATMs, computerized PRS facility for railway reservations in the post office, and a market complex to cater to the daily needs of the campus residents.

To curb the possibility of occurrence of the menace of ragging in higher educational institutions and as per the provisions of the institutes Code and Conduct of Students, an institute-level Anti-Ragging Committee has been put in place.

The members of this committee anti-ragging squads maintain constant vigilance against ragging and will make surprise inspections in hostels and other vulnerable places having the potential of ragging. They are empowered to conduct an on-the-spot enquiry into any incident of ragging report of which would be submitted to the chairman, anti-ragging committee for further necessary action, the official said.

For students from non-English-medium background having poor communicative abilities in spoken and written English, and in understanding lectures delivered in English, a remedial course in English language skills is being organized by the Institute from this academic session for the new batch of students.

IIT Guwahati boasts of excellent medical facilities with a full-fledged hospital in the campus. The institute also has a counselling cell to address various issues like homesickness, adjustment problems, stress or anxiety, thoughts and feelings of self harm, depression, lack of motivation, anger or thoughts of violence, etc., in order to facilitate the retention, adjustment, development and academic success of its students, the official said.
