IGNOU orientation programme for madrassa teachers

GUWAHATI, Oct 22 (IANS): An orientation programme for madrassa (Islamic seminary) teachers was held recently by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), a university official said on Friday.

The programme for teachers belonging to Nagaon and Morigaon districts of Assam was held at the Kampur College of Nagaon under the aegis of IGNOU's Institute of Professional Competence Advancement of Teachers (IIPCAT) at Guwahati.

"The basic objective of the programme was to orient madrassa teachers in modern teaching methods in general curricular areas. A package of 17 modules was effectively implemented in this training programme," the official said.

The modules included Education- What is it?, Basics of Education, Teacher as facilitator, madrassa education and its features, madrassa education in the Indian context among others, the official added.

The programme was coordinated by DS Bhattachargee, officer in charge of the institute and was attended by 45 madrassa teachers from adjoining areas.

A total of 14 resource persons from organizations like IGNOU, National Council of Educational Research and Training, Delhi Institute of Engineering and Training as well as from local colleges and government functionaries were involved in teaching sessions in the programme. "In future, the training of madrassa teachers will be undertaken in a bigger way by the institute," Bhattachargee said.

Certificates of participation were given to the participants at the programme's ends.
