IMPHAL,March 3 Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has reportedly noted the demand for bifurcation of Ukhrul district for making the Phungyar Assembly constituency a full-fledged 10th revenue district of the State.

Opposition MLA Wunaoshung Keishing of the Assembly constituency claiming this while speaking to media here yesterday said that the Chief Minister has given an assurance to examine the demand placed by the District Demand Committee(DCC), Phungyar Assembly Constituency.

While Eastern Nagaland Public Organisationhas demanded a frontier Nagaland in neighbouring Nagaland, District Demand Committee(DCC), Phungyar Assembly Constituency has demanded conversion of Manipurs longest serving Chief Ministers Assembly constituency into a separate district.

Sources said that it is the collective aspiration of the people in the four sub-divisions of Phungyar AC which was the home constituency of the States longest serving Chief Minister Rishang Keishing before he became Rajya Sabha MP following his defeat in the last Assembly polls.

On February 28 last, DCC had submitted a memorandum signed by 205 chiefs and chairmen of the village authorities of over 146 Phungyar villages to the Chief Minister and gave a verbal explanation on why they had put up their demand for a separate district status for Phungyar.

In reply the CM assured that the matter would be examined for further necessary action.

MLA Wunaosung further said that the demand was brought up considering the sufferings of the people of his constituency and to find a way to overcome them. The Phungyar constituency having a population of around 50,000(2001 census) is larger than the areas of Ukhrul and Chingai ACs put together.

Due to poor communications this part of the district is socially, economically, financially and educationally backward and needs special attention from the government to be at par with the rest of the people of the State, the MLA added. Health delivery system, road communication and other developmental programmes have not reached the constituency, and Phungyar is totally isolated from the rest of Ukhrul district.
