IMPHAL, Aug 16 - The 73rd Independence Day was celebrated amid a boycott call by insurgents groups in Manipur on Thursday.
The main celebration was held at the 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground here, where Chief Minister N Biren Singh inspected the guard of honour and took the salute from 57 march-past contingents.
Addressing the function, the Chief Minister Biren expressed serious concern over issue of fake Aadhaar cards to illegal migrants including Rohingya. He appealed to all concerned not to indulge in any activity which may put the future of Manipur at stake.
The passage of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, and the recent abrogation of Article 370 and 35-A had made this year�s Independence Day celebration more meaningful, he said, adding that the Swachh Bharat Mission has made the country neat and clean and the Ayushman Bharat � Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana has helped the poor in getting quality health care.
Acknowledging the acute water scarcity during the dry season, Biren Singh added that rainwater harvesting projects had been taken up at seven places. To improve the condition of government schools, development of additional infrastructure of 60 schools will be carried out under the �School Fagathansi�, a school improvement campaign, he added.
Police medals and other awards were also distributed during the function which was attended by top officials of the State.
