I-Day celebrated in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH, Aug 17 - The 69th Independence Day of the country was celebrated on Saturday at the Chowkidinghee ground here. The Tricolour was unfurled by Forest Minister Atuwa Munda.

The minister also took the salute from contingents of Assam Police, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps, Scouts and Guides and several other groups including schoolchildren during the march past. Before the ceremonial unfurling of the national flag, Munda also paid tribute to the martyred freedom fighters by laying wreaths at the altar of the martyrs.

In keeping with the celebration, the district administration also felicitated several distinguished personalities for their contributions towards the society in various fields. Social worker Kalyani Devi, journalist Sarat Barkakoty, cultural exponent Dolly Das, rank holders of the recently declared HSLC and HSSLC examinations, three progressive farmers and at least four schools securing 100 per cent pass percentage in the recently announced HSLC examinations were felicitated and awarded for their achievements.

The Independence Day was also celebrated at Dibrugarh University. The central function was organised at the university playground where the national flag was hoisted and ceremonial parade and cultural programmes followed.
