Hunger strike over district bifurcation demand

HAFLONG, July 1 � Demanding immediate bifurcation of the North Cachar Hills district into two autonomous districts under 3(c) of Article 244(2) of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, the Indigenous Students� Forum observed a hunger strike in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao district from 9 am yesterday to 5 pm today.

It is learnt that the Government of Assam had constituted a group of ministers to look into the demand for bifurcation of the NC Hills district by the Indigenous People�s Forum on July 16, 2010.

However, without having a single talk with the IPF, the group had to be dissolved again with the the Assam Assembly election in April 2011. After formation of the new Government, the group is yet to be set up.

They threatened the Government to resort to more agitational programmes if the government fails to solve their demand immediately.
